North Carolina announced quarterback Max Johnson will miss the remainder of the 2024 season after undergoing surgery Friday to repair a broken leg, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel.

He's expected to make a full recovery.

Johnson exited the Tar Heels' 19-17 win over Minnesota in the third quarter Thursday. The 6-foot-5, 225-pounder dropped back but was sacked by Minnesota safety Justin Walley. He remained on the ground for an extended period of time before being carted off the field and transported to a local hospital.

He finished the game completing 12 of 19 passes for 71 yards and an interception, along with a rushing score. Conner Harrell took over for Johnson under center.

"I hate that Max got hurt, for him and for us. Conner (has) got to come on," head coach Mack Brown said postgame, according to ESPN's Andrea Adelson.

Johnson transferred to North Carolina from Texas A&M alongside his brother, Jake Johnson. Max won the Tar Heels' quarterback battle ahead of the season.
