Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin revealed his preferred College Football Playoff format at the SEC spring meetings Tuesday.

Kiffin said he wants to eliminate automatic CFP bids and have a new format featuring the nation's top 16 teams, according to Heather Dinich of ESPN.

"The best system would be 16, and it would be the 16 best," he added, per Andy Staples of On3.

The CFP's new format has been a hot topic in college football. Last year, the committee expanded from four to 12 teams in a model that awarded the top four seeds and accompanying byes to the highest-ranked conference champions.

The committee recently agreed to move to a straight seeding model for the 2025 season. The five highest-ranked conference champs will still receive automatic bids, but they'll be seeded according to their ranking.

The CFP will reportedly expand to either 14 or 16 teams in 2026.

Ole Miss missed the CFP last season as the nation's 14th-ranked team. However, Clemson, which placed 16th in the final rankings, earned a playoff spot as the 12-seed and the fifth-highest-ranked conference champion.

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said Tuesday that he's discussed with league coaches a format that would include the five highest-ranked conference champions and 11 at-large spots, according to Dinich.
