The Big Ten conference has started considering an idea for an expanded 24- or 28-team College Football Playoff format, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel.

This format would reportedly eliminate conference title games and give each Power 4 league a substantial number of automatic bids. In a 28-team format, the Big Ten and SEC would get seven automatic bids, according to Thamel The ACC and Big 12 would get five each, leaving two auto bids for the non-Power 4 conferences and two at-large teams.

Tony Petitti, the commissioner of the Big Ten, shared the idea with his conference Wednesday, sources told Thamel.

While the idea hasn't been discussed much outside of the Big Ten, Petitti did talk about it with SEC commissioner Greg Sankey on Friday, according to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports.

The CFP moved to a 12-team model in 2024. The upcoming 2025 season could be the last time a 12-team format is used, though there's been no agreement regarding expansion yet.
