Tennessee named Joey Aguilar its starting quarterback ahead of the Volunteers' season opener against Syracuse on Aug. 30.

Tennessee informed Aguilar and other players about its decision to turn to the transfer QB during a team meeting Sunday, according to Adam Sparks of the Knoxville News Sentinel. He competed for the role with redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger and freshman George MacIntyre.

Aguilar joined Tennessee in May from UCLA as a potential replacement for Nico Iamaleava, the Vols' 2024 starter who transferred to the Bruins this offseason. Iamaleava led the Volunteers to their first College Football Playoff berth last season.

Aguilar previously starred across two seasons at Appalachian State, passing for 6,760 yards and 56 touchdowns in 25 appearances.
