Marquee Matchups
10 TCU Horned Frogs (-5.5) at 20 West Virginia Mountaineers
Chris Battaglia: The Horned Frogs score points like its going out of style, and while the Mountaineers play well at home, they won’t be able to keep up with TCU’s offense. West Virginia is 1-2 against ranked opponents, with both losses coming at home. TCU -5.5
Gino Bottero: TCU's 82-point performance hardly came out of nowhere. Trevone Boykin has played like a Heisman contender all season, helping the Horned Frogs to an average of 50.4 points per game - tops in the nation. They'll need to continue to produce fireworks if they hope to climb into the national top-4, and West Virginia will just be another hurdle in their path. TCU -5.5
George Halim: Clint Trickett has been stellar behind center, but unfortunately for West Virginia, it’s hosting a TCU team that put up 58 points against Baylor three weeks ago, and 82 against Texas Tech this past Saturday. It’s no secret the Horned Frogs offense is destructive, but in the last two games, the defense has given up a combined 36 points. At this point, the Mountaineers can only hope not to get embarrassed by Trevone Boykin and company. TCU -5.5
4 Auburn Tigers at 7 Ole Miss Rebels (-1.5)
Battaglia: The Rebels still have the best defense in the country despite last week’s loss. Auburn’s defense isn’t as effective as LSU’s, so Ole Miss should be able to score enough points and shut the Tigers down. Home field will only help the Rebels. Ole Miss -1.5
Bottero: Auburn already has a big road win in a hostile environment, downing Kansas State in Manhattan in a midweek matchup. The have a chance to make another statement in the weekend's marquee matchup in Oxford. Both teams play sound defense, but the Tigers bring a more consistently productive offense to the table. Auburn +1.5
Halim: Ole Miss is coming off an upset loss to LSU and is headed back to Oxford to try to pick up the pieces. If any other team was coming to town, all would be rosy - but not this week. Auburn leads the all-time series 28-10 and is 9-3 at Vaught-Hemingway. Not to mention the Tigers have taken four of the last five meetings. If Bo Wallace can’t break out of whatever slump he was in last week, the Rebels might very well drop their second in a row. Auburn +1.5
18 Utah Utes at 15 Arizona State Sun Devils (-6)
Battaglia: Utah has played better on the road in 2014, with its only loss of the season coming at home. The Sun Devils surrendered 225 rushing yards to UCLA in their only loss, which should have Utes running back Devontae Booker salivating. Utah +6
Bottero: Arizona State was all but written off when they were blown out by UCLA in Pasadena on Sept. 25, but they played that game without quarterback Taylor Kelly. The Sun Devils have been better since, and now have Kelly back in tow. Getting this game at home is a big deal, and Utah may get caught looking ahead to next week when they're scheduled to host Oregon. Arizona State -6
Halim: If Utah wasn't convincing enough in its road win over UCLA, a 24-21 win over USC must have worked wonders. Utah has emerged as a perennial sleeper in the Pac-12. In the next four weeks, the Utes will have a gut check against Oregon, Stanford and Arizona. But first, Utah needs to get past the Sun Devils. Don’t be surprised if Arizona State falls back to the pack in the Pac-12 South. Utah +6
Wild-Card Selections
14 Arizona Wildcats at 25 UCLA Bruins (-6.5)
Battaglia: Arizona’s road victory over Oregon was impressive and the Wildcats match up well against UCLA’s balanced offense. Both losses for the Bruins occurred at home, while the Wildcats looked especially strong at Washington State last week. Even if Arizona doesn’t win, the difference should be less than a touchdown. Arizona +6.5
19 Oklahoma Sooners (-16.5) at Iowa State Cyclones
Bottero: For all their troubles, the Cyclones have been sure to keep Ames a tough place to play. This week they get an Oklahoma squad that has been a major disappointment this year. The Sooners haven't been good enough on either side of the ball that they can be trusted to build up a margin against any opponent. In fact, Oklahoma's last three games have been decided by a total of 10 points. Iowa State +16.5
2 Florida State Seminoles (-4) at Louisville Cardinals
Halim: It would be presumptuous to believe Florida State will walk all over Louisville. It very well might, but if there's an ACC school that can take it to the Seminoles, it's the Cardinals, and if there's ever a time to do it, it's now. Louisville will field it's expected fleet of starters for the first time this season in the marquee matchup of the week. Both teams are fresh off a bye, Karlos Williams's off-field issues could leave him distracted. Louisville +4
