Former Oklahoma co-offensive coordinator Josh Heupel has been hired as Utah State's offensive coordinator, the school announced Friday.

"What Utah State University and its alumni base has done in the last decade stepping up financially and giving themselves an opportunity to compete at the highest level year in and year out is something I wanted to be a part of," said Heupel. "Utah State has been competing for championships and the program has a lot of momentum, and I know its brightest days are ahead."

Heupel was fired from Oklahoma earlier in January after the Sooners finished the season a disappointing 8-5. Heupel served as Oklahoma's quarterbacks coach from 2006-2010 before moving to offensive coordinator for the last four seasons.

"We are very excited to add Josh Heupel to our coaching staff," said Aggie head coach Matt Wells. "Josh brings a tremendous pedigree and accomplishments to Utah State and the offensive side of the ball. Our philosophies are very similar in how to move the football and I'm looking forward to a seamless transition this season with our offense. I'm excited to welcome Josh, his wife Dawn, and their two children to the Aggie football family."

He will replace Kevin McGiven, who left Utah State to be the quarterbacks coach at Oregon State.
