Colorado AD Rick George: I can't see us playing Colorado State beyond 2020

Colorado and Colorado State's centuries-long rivalry could be coming to a halt.

The Rams and Buffaloes have met annually, yet just six games remain on their contract to continue the rivalry. On Sept. 19, they will meet at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. The final game of the series falls in 2020, which will be played in Fort Collins.

Buffaloes athletic director Rick George expressed his belief that the game played between Pac-12 and Mountain West teams may be nearing its conclusion, Tom Kensler of the The Denver Post reported.

"After the current contract, playing the game in Denver is dead. And I'm not sure where our series with CSU goes after that either. Today, we would not extend our agreement (for CU to play CSU in football) past 2020," George said.

George acknowledges that a great number of Buffaloes fans, like himself, prefer for the game to be played at a campus site, instead of Sports Authority Field. He intends on working to bring the 2016-19 games back to campus sites.

"My job is to do what's best for CU, the athletic department, our teams, our student-athletes. I think our best interest is to move games under the contract to campus sites and then, after 2020, I'm not sure (the series) is in our best interest, and that's why at this point I wouldn't extend it," George said.
