Ohio State started slow offensively, but turned things on in the second half and the Buckeyes' defense dominated all game long, en route to a 38-0 smashing of Hawaii. No. 1 Ohio State improved to 2-0 on the year and extended its winning streak to 15 games.
Here's what you need to know:
- After seeing only mop-up duty in the season opener, J.T. Barrett came in at quarterback for the Buckeyes midway through the second quarter with Ohio State leading 7-0.
- Barrett promptly led Ohio State on a scoring drive, capped off by a 3-yard touchdown run by Ezekiel Elliott, his second of the game.
- Elliott was unable to break any long runs against the Rainbow Warriors' defense, but still finished with 101 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries. He now has seven straight 100-yard games.
- Neither starter Cardale Jones nor Barrett had great games, with Jones going 12-of-18 for 111 yards and Barrett finishing 8-of-15 for 70 yards.
- Hawaii start Max Wittek really struggled, completing 7-of-24 passes for 67 yards with a pair of interceptions. Most of that yardage came on his very first pass of the game, a 29-yard completion.
- Hawaii finished the game with 85 yards passing, snapping a streak of 213 straight games with at least 100 yards through the air.
Play of the Game
After only allowing 165 total yards, it only makes sense that play of the game comes from Ohio State's defense. Vonn Bell came up with an incredible interception - off of three deflections no less - in the first half.
It was a huge game for Bell, who also scooped up a fumble and returned it for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Honorable Mention
This moment likely meant more to Buckeyes fans than anything seen during the game, as Ohio State unveiled the banner for last season's national championship win.
