Cooper Bateman starts for Alabama vs. Ole Miss

Matthew Emmons / USA TODAY Sports

Despite a 2-0 start to the season, Alabama is changing starting quarterbacks for its toughest game yet this year.

The Crimson Tide went with sophomore Cooper Bateman under center against Ole Miss, instead of Jake Coker who started the first two games of the season.

Bateman appeared in both of Alabama's games this season as Coker's backup, going 18-of-25 for 149 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Bateman was a four-star member of Alabama's 2013 recruiting class and was ranked as the No. 3 pocket passer coming out of high school.

Coker was good if unspectacular in his two starts, completing 30-of-47 passes for 427 yards with two touchdowns and a pick. It seemed like he finally had his shot to be a starter after losing out on quarterback battles to Jameis Winston at Florida State two years ago, and then another to Blake Sims last year after transferring to the Crimson Tide.

However, with just under seven minutes to go in the second quarter and Alabama trailing 17-3, Saban made a switch at quarterback and went back to Coker, seeing if the veteran could get the offense moving. The only thing for sure is the Alabama quarterback situation appears to be unsettled.
