No. 15 Ole Miss shocks No. 2 Alabama for 2nd year in a row
For the second year in a row Ole Miss shocked Alabama, as the No. 15 Rebels pulled a 43-37 upset of the second-ranked Crimson Tide on Saturday night, earning consecutive wins against Alabama for the first time in school history.
Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly was the star, going 18-of-33 for 341 yards and three touchdowns while adding another score on the ground.
Here's what you need to know:
- Alabama started sophomore Cooper Bateman at quarterback after Jake Coker got the nod for the first two games this season.
- Coker entered the game with just under seven minutes to go in the second quarter with Bama down 17-3 after an ugly interception by Bateman.
- It was Alabama's first home loss since losing to Texas A&M in 2012, ending a 17-game home winning streak. It was also the first time Ole Miss won in Tuscaloosa since 1988.
- Alabama outgained Ole Miss 503-433 but committed five turnovers, including a Coker interception in the closing minutes, which directly led to 24 points for the Rebels.
- It's the first time Alabama lost its SEC opener since 1991.
- Down 20, Alabama scored two touchdowns in just over four minutes to cut the lead to six with 12 and a half minutes to go in the fourth. Ole Miss pushed the lead back to 19, only to see it shrink back to six before holding on for the win.
- A 73-yard touchdown by Ole Miss was initially taken off the board in the fourth quarter after Chad Kelly was flagged for passing beyond the line of scrimmage. However, after review the ruling was overturned and the touchdown counted.
- Alabama had five turnovers after committing only two in the their first two games combined.
- Alabama allowed two plays of at least 60 yards all of last season, and allowed two plays of over 60 yards to Ole Miss on Saturday.
- It's the first time in school history Ole Miss has scored at least 43 points in three consecutive games.
- "They deserved to win this game and they outplayed us," Alabama head coach Nick Saban said after the game. "I don't know if there's anyone we can beat if we give away 31 points."
Play of the Game
There was no doubt about the Play of the Game, as the Rebels scored a ridiculous 66-yard touchdown early in the third quarter. When plays like this go in your favor, it's obviously your night.
