Utah State names Frank Maile, Kendrick Shaver co-defensive coordinators
Six days after losing Kevin Clune to Oregon State, Utah State has named Frank Maile and Kendrick Shaver its co-defensive coordinators, the school announced Thursday.
It will be a return to the Aggies' program for Maile, who played for Utah State and spent five years on the staff from 2009-13 before serving as Vanderbilt's defensive line coach the past two seasons.
"I'm really looking forward to returning to Utah State and the opportunity to work with so many of the players and coaches I have in the past," the former Aggies standout said. "Utah State has great momentum and I hope to continue leading the young men of the program to even greater achievements."
Shaver spent the past five seasons as the Aggies' defensive backs coach before earning the promotion to coordinator. He helped lead the nation's 17th-ranked defense in 2015.
"I'm excited to announce the position of co-defensive coordinator to Kendrick Shaver," head coach Matt Wells said. "It's a reflection of his tremendous work in the secondary with our defensive backs, his knowledge of our system and his loyalty to this program. Kendrick and Frank will both do a great job together leading our young men on that side of the ball."
Maile and Shaver worked together at Utah State for three seasons, including the 2013 campaign in which the Aggies ranked seventh in the country in scoring defense.
Clune left Utah State after one season as defensive coordinator to take the same position with the Beavers. The Aggies posted the Mountain West Conference's third-best defense during his tenure.
