Top 10 recruiting classes after National Signing Day
National Signing Day had a bit of everything: videos, surprising signings, flips - you name it. But when the dust finally settled, 10 teams separated themselves from the rest of the pack and staked claim to an elite 2016 recruiting class.
Rankings are based on the ESPN 300.
1. Florida State
Alabama was unseated as the king of recruiting for the first time since 2011, and it has Jimbo Fisher and Florida State to thank. The Seminoles reeled in eight of the top 100 prospects, including five-star cornerback Lavonta Taylor, and second-rated dual-threat quarterback Malik Henry.
2. Alabama
Nick Saban knows better than anyone that recruiting is a marathon, not a sprint. Alabama started the day with the ninth-ranked class, but finished at No. 2. It's the first time in five years the Crimson Tide didn't haul in the top-ranked class, but Saban still made sure to pull in a top three group for the eighth time in eight full seasons at Alabama. This year's class is headlined by No. 1 inside linebacker Ben Davis, No. 3 offensive tackle Jonah Williams, and No. 5 outside linebacker Mack Wilson.
3. LSU
The Tigers entered Wednesday atop the rankings, but dropped a couple spots after a relatively quiet day. Still, LSU has a stacked class en route to Baton Rouge, led by No. 6 defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence, No. 2 offensive tackle Willie Allen, and No. 3 cornerback Kristian Fulton, who entered signing day undeclared.
4. Ole Miss
Ole Miss was the only team to walk out of signing day with two five-star signings. No. 1 offensive tackle Greg Little and No. 4 defensive tackle Benito Jones garnered much of the buzz around Oxford, but Hugh Freeze also notched top-ranked dual-threat quarterback Shea Patterson, and top-ranked safety Deontay Jones, who announced his commitment while skydiving.
5. Ohio State
The team below Ohio State took most of the headlines, but Urban Meyer managed to assemble another brilliant class for the Buckeyes. This year's crop is headlined by No. 1 defensive end Nick Bosa (brother of former Buckeyes star Joey Bosa), No. 3 outside linebacker Keandre Jones, and No. 2 running back Demario McCall. Meyer also secured quarterback Dwayne Haskins Jr., who he called the "best QB at his age I've ever seen."
6. Michigan
There may be five teams ahead of Michigan on this list, but none of them landed a player ranked higher than defensive tackle Rashan Gary. The nation's No. 1 recruit picked the Wolverines over Clemson on Wednesday, which served as cake, while No. 4 tight end Devin Asiasi from California later turned into icing.
7. Georgia
Much of the conversation surrounding Georgia before signing day had to do with No. 1 quarterback Jacob Eason and five-star tight end Isaac Nauta. However, Kirby Smart did more than just secure their rights on signing day: the Bulldogs landed No. 2 athlete Mecole Hardman, flipped No. 25 defensive tackle David Marshall from Auburn, and turned numerous verbal commitments into signed letters of intent along the way.
8. Clemson
Clemson narrowly missed out on Gary, but still made a big splash on signing day. The Tigers officially signed five-star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, and also netted No. 2 cornerback Trayvon Mullen, who entered Wednesday as the highest-rated four-star recruit still available. No. 1 outside linebacker Rashaun Smith and No. 5 running back Tavien Feaster also signed with Dabo Swinney's squad.
9. Auburn
Auburn is coming off an underwhelming 7-6 season, but its 2016 recruiting class is anything but that. The Tigers' big day was headlined by defensive tackle Derrick Brown, who was the last five-star prospect on the board. Gus Malzahn also acquired No. 2 wide receiver Nate Craig-Myers, who vowed to win a Biletnikoff Trophy within the next four years, and No. 5 dual-threat quarterback Woody Barrett.
10. Texas
No team made as much noise on signing day as Texas. Charlie Strong's Longhorns moved up 22 spots on the class rankings after signing 12 of the top 300 prospects. Strong started the day early by landing No. 2 safety Brandon Jones, and kept the ball rolling with No. 2 outside linebacker Jeffrey McCulloch and No. 12 defensive tackle Jordan Elliott, along with a host of others.
