Browns player 'wouldn't be surprised' if Osweiler enters camp as starting QB
Brock Osweiler sure seems to be making the most of his opportunity in Cleveland.
All reports out of Browns OTAs to this point have been that the veteran quarterback is doing everything the team is asking of him. ESPN's Adam Schefter echoed that sentiment Wednesday, indicating that Osweiler has "impressed thus far," while also providing a particularly interesting quote from inside the building.
One Browns player told Schefter that he "wouldn't be surprised if Brock is QB1 heading into camp in July."
The widely reported expectation following Cleveland's salary-dump acquisition of Osweiler back in March was that it was only a matter of time before he was cut loose. Whether by way of another trade or an outright release, the Browns appeared more than willing to add the pick that came with taking on an overpriced contract while looking elsewhere for starting options.
But Osweiler sticking around to this point, and generating nothing but positive rumblings, may indicate a possibility that he really has earned himself the opportunity to compete for the starting job.
Disappointing as he may have been after landing a four-year, $72-million contract with the Houston Texans in free agency last year, the 26-year-old certainly brings more experience to the table than Cody Kessler and second-round rookie DeShone Kizer.
Perhaps that will end up being an attractive option for the Browns if Kessler doesn't progress and the coaching staff deems Kizer better suited for a redshirt season.
Osweiler started 14 games in his debut season in Houston, completing 59 percent of his passes for 2,957 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions.
