Louisiana satellite camp involving Texas canceled after perceived LSU pressure

LSU may not want Texas snooping around in its backyard.

A satellite camp that was set to take place in Hammond, La. on Thursday featuring Texas as a primary attendee has been cancelled because of reported outside pressure from LSU, according to Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated.

The camp was to be hosted by Belhaven University, a Division III school. According to Thamel, the cancellation of the camp will cost Belhaven a total of $5,000.

The announcement comes not long after camps involving the Longhorns at Louisiana College and Southeastern Louisiana were also called off, according to Thamel. Texas was not the only program set to attend Thursday's showcase, however, as Houston, Cornell, and Belhaven had also committed to attending.

Belhaven head coach Hal Mumme confirmed an agreement had been reached for Saint Thomas Aquinas High School in Hammond, La. to host the ill-fated camp after BREC Memorial Stadium revoked its commitment on Tuesday, and he had a message for Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron after the event was canceled.

“If you are the head coach at LSU, you should want the other kids in your state to have an opportunity,” Mumme said. “Ed needs to think about those kids that aren’t going to get a scholarship to LSU. I’ve been in the SEC as the coach of the (flagship) university of the state. You have show respect to those other kids as well."
