Report: Raptors trade Caboclo to Kings for Malachi Richardson
An era is over in Toronto.
The Raptors have agreed to trade forward Bruno Caboclo to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for swingman Malachi Richardson, sources told Yahoo's Shams Charania.
The deal appears to be a cost-cutting move for both teams, as the Kings reportedly intend to waive Caboclo, and the hard-capped Raptors save approximately $900,000 against the luxury tax.
Caboclo, the Raptors' forever project, had played just 113 minutes with the team since being drafted 20th overall in 2014. ESPN analyst Fran Fraschilla infamously christened Caboclo with the immortal labels "Brazilian KD" and "two years away from being two years away" on draft night.
Nearly four years later, the still-raw 22-year-old with the 7-foot-7 wingspan holds averages of 1.1 points and 0.6 rebounds on 26.2 percent shooting in his 25 NBA games. He has, however, made meaningful progress - particularly at the defensive end - with the Raptors' G League affiliate, the 905.
In 34 games this season with the 905, he's averaged 14.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.3 steals, and 1.6 blocks, with a .396/.335/.831 shooting line. In last year's championship-clinching win, he went for 31 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks. Brazilian KD he is not, but there remains some potential 3-and-D upside for Caboclo.
The Kings picked Richardson with the 22nd pick in the 2016 draft, but haven't found much of a role for him even in the midst of a rebuild. At 6-foot-6, he has good size for his position, but hasn't yet shown much shooting range or refined ball skills. He averaged 3.5 points and 1.3 rebounds in 25 games with Sacramento this season, shooting 33 percent from the field and 30.8 percent from 3-point range.
