Pirates' Bart: Hayes 'crazy smart' for making play at home after collision
Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Joey Bart praised third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes for a heads-up play that prevented the St. Louis Cardinals from scoring following a collision near home plate during Wednesday's game.
Bart and first baseman Endy Rodríguez collided in the eighth inning of a scoreless contest following a Willson Contreras pop-up with two outs, allowing the ball to drop and prompting Thomas Saggese to break for home from second base. However, Hayes quickly retrieved the ball and tagged out the Cardinals runner at the plate to preserve the tie.
"Ke'Bryan is a crazy smart player," Bart said postgame following the Pirates' 2-1 win in the 13-inning marathon, according to Alex Stumpf of MLB.com. "A really, really instinctual player. He has the best internal clock I've ever seen by a player on the field. He slows the game down better than anybody. That's why he is who he is."
Bart added: "The only thing I remember is looking at the umpire and seeing him with a fist like an out and thinking, 'How was he out?'"
The 28-year-old backstop was also involved in another memorable moment, winning the game with a walk-off single in extras.
