Browns' Jackson insists Taylor will remain starting QB after drafting Mayfield
For all the excitement surrounding Baker Mayfield, the quarterback the Cleveland Browns took with the first pick of the 2018 draft, head coach Hue Jackson insists nothing has changed in regard to who will start under center next season.
"I'm not going to back off of this and we can keep writing this narrative, Tyrod Taylor is the starting quarterback of this football team. That will not change," Jackson said after the first day of rookie minicamp, Scott Petrak of BrownsZone.com reports.
The Browns traded a third-round pick in this year's draft to the Buffalo Bills to acquire Taylor in March. But that was before the selection of Mayfield.
Nonetheless, Jackson said it will take some time before Mayfield is given the keys to the franchise.
"Let's make sure we pump our brakes a little bit because he has a ways to go and a lot to learn," Jackson said. "I am very excited about him. He has a lot of characteristics that we love. That is why he is here."
While Jackson continues to consider Taylor the unquestioned quarterback of the present, there's no question the future hinges on Mayfield.
