Tigers bring 'Rally Goose' into dugout, fly off with 2nd straight win
Honk, honk. The Detroit Tigers are on a roll, and it's all thanks to a friendly Canada Goose who stopped by Comerica Park.
During Wednesday's rain-soaked affair between the Tigers and Los Angeles Angels, a stray goose became an internet sensation after disrupting the proceedings by wandering on the diamond. Things took an even crazier turn after the goose was chased off the field, as it flew straight into a video board and fell into the stands.
Detroit's bats came to life post-goose on Wednesday, breaking a tie game open with five sixth-inning runs en route to a 6-1 victory. So naturally, when the Angels and Tigers again squared off Thursday afternoon, the home team was trying to once again harness the power of "Rally Goose" in the dugout.
Once again, it worked. With Detroit's newest animal sensation looking on, the Tigers romped to a 6-2 win, moving "Rally Goose" to a perfect 2-0 on the season. Naturally, the goose was front and center in the celebrations.
The story of the real "Rally Goose" that inspired this whole fad after flying into the video board on Wednesday has a happy ending. By a stroke of luck, the goose fell into the stands right beside a Tigers season-ticket holder who just happened to be a veterinarian. Dr. Catherine Roach tended to the distressed and stunned animal, and helped release it outside the stadium. Later, she took the goose to a nearby wildlife sanctuary, according to Christine Ferretti of the Detroit News.
As a thank-you for her role in assisting the animal, the Tigers gave Roach the honor of throwing out Thursday's ceremonial first pitch.
