Texans won't stop Watson from running despite ACL injury
NFL defenses had no answer for rookie sensation Deshaun Watson's aggressive passing style and dynamic running ability last season. The Houston Texans' offense thrived off Watson's versatility and athleticism, incorporating elements of a college-style attack to create a high-scoring unit that looked capable of staying with the league's elite.
Watson's first NFL season was ended by an ACL tear in practice, but the Texans don't plan on limiting their franchise player - who rushed for 269 yards and two scores - despite his major knee injury.
"That's always something that we talk about, moving when you have to, extend plays when you have to," quarterbacks coach Sean Ryan said, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. "Being smart though with that, that's been something we've talked to him with about since Day 1, really. Understand when the journey is over. When it's over, it's time to get down and protect yourself, protect your team.
"I think in the pocket, we talk a lot about him having his quiet mechanics back there and going through progressions. He certainly knows when it's time to do that as well. That's one of those things we're just going to continue to harp on and improve on and that's the route that we're going."
The Texans averaged an eye-popping 34.6 points in Watson's six starts, and head coach Bill O'Brien said this offseason his team will design a brand-new offense to better suit the 2017 first-rounder's skill set.
