Report: Mavericks tender qualifying offer to Ferrell

The Dallas Mavericks have tendered a qualifying offer to point guard Yogi Ferrell, ensuring their right to match any offer sheet presented to him when he hits free agency July 1, league sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Ferrell emerged as an important piece of the Mavericks' backcourt rotation in his second professional campaign. The 6-foot guard appeared in all 82 regular-season games, averaging 10.2 points, three rebounds, and 2.5 assists while shooting 37.3 percent on 3-pointers.

It's a stark turnaround for the 25-year-old. Undrafted after a four-year collegiate career at Indiana, Ferrell spent one month with the Brooklyn Nets in 2016 before being waived in December. Later that season, he signed a 10-day contract, then a multi-year deal with the Mavericks that ran through the end of the 2017-18 campaign. He was named to the All-Rookie Second Team in 2016-17.

By reportedly extending a qualifying offer to Ferrell, Dallas' brain trust has ensured his place in the Association for at least few more seasons to come.
