John Tavares is gone, but the New York Islanders are wasting little time to try to fill his spot at center, as the team has reached out to the Buffalo Sabres about a deal for Ryan O'Reilly, reports Larry Brooks of the New York Post.
O'Reilly has been the subject of trade speculation in recent weeks, but the fact that he's owed a $7.5-million signing bonus by midnight Sunday may have dissuaded interested suitors. He'll then be owed only $1 million salary for the remainder of the season.
Last month, a report indicated that the Carolina Hurricanes, Montreal Canadiens, and St. Louis Blues have shown interest in O'Reilly.
In 81 appearances with the Sabres last season, O'Reilly tallied 24 goals and 37 assists.
