Report: Chiefs' Mahomes could sign record deal when eligible in 2020
Patrick Mahomes could be one year away from landing a record-breaking contract.
The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to sign their quarterback to an extension following next season, when he's first eligible, with a deal that could be the NFL's first $200-million contract, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Schefter adds that issues involving the collective bargaining agreement - which would only have two seasons remaining in 2020 - would have to be addressed, as well as those that involve the final two years that Mahomes would have left on his rookie deal, including a fifth-year option.
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is currently the league's highest-paid player after he signed a contract last summer that pays him $33.5 million in average annual value.
Mahomes was stellar in his first year as a starter, emerging as a top MVP candidate. The 2017 first-rounder threw for 5,097 yards and a league-high 50 touchdown passes in 2018.
