Report: Padres aggressive with offer to Machado
The San Diego Padres have been "very aggressive" with their offer for free-agent infielder Manny Machado, according to Andy Martino of SNY.
The assumption is Machado will accept the highest offer but is unsure if he wants to play for the Padres, according to Martino.
San Diego was among the later entrants in the sweepstakes for the 26-year-old, with reports of serious interest coming in January.
Meanwhile, some in Machado's camp are encouraging him to accept a shorter-term deal with the New York Yankees, Martino reports.
New York has not ruled out adding a top free agent even after the additions of infielders Troy Tulowitzki and DJ LeMahieu.
The Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago White Sox are also in the hunt for Machado.
He appears to have an offer on the table from the White Sox, though the reported details of the contract were said to be inaccurate by MLB Network's Jon Heyman.
Machado is coming off a career year in which he slashed .297/.367/.538 with 37 home runs and 107 RBIs.
