Report: Lakers expected to offer Lue head coaching job in coming days
With Monty Williams off the board, the Los Angeles Lakers appear to be zeroing in on their man.
The organization is proceeding toward offering Tyronn Lue the head coaching job in the coming days and has no plans to introduce new candidates for the role, leagues sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Ramona Shelburne.
During the search process, former Lakers head coach Phil Jackson suggested to owner Jeanie Buss that Lue would be a really good hire for the club, sources told Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times.
Lue also has a rich history with LeBron James. He coached the Lakers superstar with the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2016-18, winning an NBA championship in his first season and following that up with two more trips to The Finals. He went 128-83 overall as the Cavs' bench boss but was fired this past season after starting the year 0-6.
Additionally, 42-year-old Lue has ties to the Lakers, as he began his 11-year playing career with the organization, capturing a pair of NBA titles in three seasons as a backup point guard.
Lue reportedly struck an "emotional chord" during his interview with Lakers executives as he brought up his playing days with the club.
Miami Heat assistant Juwan Howard and ex-Milwaukee Bucks head coach Jason Kidd are also among the rumored candidates to replace Luke Walton, who mutually parted ways with the Lakers after a 37-45 record this past season. The team hasn't made the playoffs since the 2012-13 campaign.
