Maddon, Epstein to discuss manager's future Saturday

Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon will meet with president of baseball operations Theo Epstein on Saturday to discuss his future, he told reporters.

The 65-year-old's contract is set to expire at the end of the season and there is widespread speculation that he won't return to manage the team next year.

"It's to discuss everything right now, moving forward, that kind of stuff," Maddon told reporters when asked about the meeting. "We haven't had any kind of a talk yet about any of this so we will tonight."

Maddon added that he hopes to settle his contract situation by Sunday, according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com.

The manager has been a reported possible target of the Los Angeles Angels, New York Mets, and Philadelphia Phillies.

Maddon began his baseball coaching career with the Angels organization in 1975. He served as a major-league coach from 1994 to 2005, winning a World Series ring as a bench coach under Mike Scioscia in 2002.

He joined the Tampa Bay Rays as their manager in 2005 and amassed a 754-705 record in nine seasons, which included the organization's first American League East division title and World Series appearance in 2008.

Maddon helped turn the Cubs around almost immediately upon his hiring in 2015. Chicago advanced to the National League Championship Series in his first year on the job and won a World Series - its first in 108 years - in 2016. This is the first time since his hiring that the club didn't make the postseason.
