NCAA Tournament canceled due to coronavirus concerns
The 2020 NCAA Tournament has been canceled due to concerns over the spread of the coronavirus.
"Today, NCAA president Mark Emmert and the board of governors canceled the Division I men's and women's 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships," the organization said. "This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities."
The announcement comes after all the major college basketball conferences canceled tournaments that were already underway on Thursday. Shortly following the ACC Tournament stopping play, Duke announced it's suspending participation in all athletic events, including the NCAA Tournament, regardless of whether it ran.
The move means 2020 will be the first year the men's NCAA basketball tournament hasn't been played since 1939.
Other sports affected by the NCAA's decision include the College World Series, golf championships and the Frozen Four.
