Report: Angels furloughing scouts before draft
The Los Angeles Angels will furlough scouts nine days before the 2020 MLB Amateur Draft in June, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, who adds that the move is a part of a larger reduction of employees throughout the organization.
Scouts who spent time evaluating potential prospects in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico will be furloughed on June 1, sources told Rosenthal. The draft is scheduled to take place remotely on June 10-11 and will only consist of five rounds - down from the standard 40.
Angels scouting director Matt Swanson, who will run the club's draft, and nine other scouts will reportedly also be furloughed but not until June 16. In total, up to 27 scouts listed in the team's media guide could be impacted, according to Rosenthal.
"We are confident that the Angels have the information and personnel to have a successful draft," team spokesperson Marie Garvey said.
