2020 MLB season will have Aug. 31 trade deadline

Major League Baseball's truncated 2020 season will feature some temporary adjustments to rosters and a trade deadline that's moved back one month.

The new trade deadline will be Aug. 31, according to details obtained by ESPN. Players will need to be added to major-league rosters by Sept. 15 to be eligible for the playoffs.

Because of the abbreviated training camps, every club will field 30-man active rosters to begin the season. That number will drop to 28 players after two weeks, with the normal 26-man rosters returning following one month.

Teams will also be permitted to take a maximum of three taxi-squad players on road trips. If a club chooses to bring three extra players, one must be a catcher.

MLB's transaction freeze, which has been in place since spring training was halted in March, will end Friday at 12:00 p.m. ET.

Spring training is scheduled to resume on July 1, with teams operating out of their home ballparks. Pitchers and catchers will report first, with position players following shortly thereafter.

MLB will also allow in-person scouting during the season.
