Report: Reigning MVP Vela leaning toward skipping MLS tournament
Reigning MLS MVP Carlos Vela is reportedly considering opting out of the MLS is Back Tournament that starts next week.
While the Los Angeles FC star is leaning toward skipping the competition, Vela's decision is "not 100 percent certain," a source told ESPN FC's Jeff Carlisle.
Vela, whose wife is pregnant, is apparently put off by the idea of going to the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando due to the strict rules prohibiting family and friends from staying with players during the month-long competition.
He was voted as the 2019 MVP after a campaign in which he established a new league record of 34 regular-season goals for an LAFC side that captured the Supporters' Shield with the best record.
Since joining LAFC in 2018, the 31-year-old has scored 57 goals in 72 appearances in all competitions.
The MLS is Back Tournament runs from July 8 to Aug. 11.
LAFC go up against the Houston Dynamo on July 13 in their first match of the MLS is Back Tournament.
