Mets owner: Cano's $24M salary will be spent on players

New York Mets owner Steve Cohen turned some heads when he chimed in on the 162-game suspension handed down Wednesday to Robinson Cano and said how the second baseman's salary will be used.

The eight-time All-Star received the ban for a second failed PED test, and he'll forego his $24-million salary in 2021.

"Spend it on players, bullpen cart can wait," Cohen wrote on Twitter when a fan asked him about the team's plan for the money that was set aside for Cano next season.

Cano hasn't talked to the Mets about the suspension nor issued a public statement, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

The Mets have reportedly been linked to several high-profile free agents, including star slugger Marcell Ozuna. New York is also one of the teams connected to a potential trade for Cleveland Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor.

Right-hander Trevor Bauer, who's a free agent after winning the NL Cy Young, is arguably the best player available. His agent approved of Cohen's tweet:
