Arians: If there's a QB that can match Brady's success, it's Mahomes
No other NFL quarterback has accomplished more than Tom Brady, and that debate isn't even close as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' signal-caller prepares for his 10th Super Bowl.
But Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians believes that if someone could match Brady's accolades, it's his opponent in Super Bowl LV.
"What Tom has done is historic, but if there's another player who could do it, it's (Kansas City Chiefs quarterback) Patrick Mahomes," Arians said Thursday, according to Grace Remington of CBS Tampa.
Mahomes took the league by storm after being selected by the Chiefs in the first round in 2017. He backed up Alex Smith as a rookie before posting an MVP campaign in 2018 by throwing for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns. He then led Kansas City to its first title in five decades the following season.
Brady, a three-time regular-season MVP, has thrown for 79,204 yards and 581 touchdowns during the regular season since entering the NFL in 2000. The 14-time Pro Bowler also owns every notable quarterback playoff record, including the most Super Bowl wins with six.
The Buccaneers signed Brady as a free agent in the last offseason. Tampa Bay was one of the most active teams during free agency, and Arians believes that mentality was necessary for a club aiming to return to its best days.
"You can't hit a home run unless you swing for one," Arians said, per Greg Auman of The Athletic. "You can't do anything special in life sitting on a fence."
Prior to the 2020 campaign, the Buccaneers' last playoff win was in 2002, the season they won their first Super Bowl title.
