Report: Mets offer GM job to Eppler

The New York Mets have offered Billy Eppler the general manager position, a source told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Eppler is heading home to California to decide if he'll take the job after he met with Mets owner Steve Cohen in New York, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

The 46-year-old executive served as Angels GM from the end of the 2015 season until the conclusion of the 2020 campaign when he was replaced by Perry Minasian. Eppler's most notable acquisitions during his tenure were Shohei Ohtani and Anthony Rendon.

The executive also worked for the Colorado Rockies and New York Yankees before his time with Los Angeles.

New York has been in pursuit of a new GM, president of baseball operations, and manager since the beginning of the offseason.

The club seemingly struck out on luring other top candidates to the role, including longtime Oakland Athletics executive Billy Beane - who was drafted by the Mets as a player - and former Chicago Cubs president Theo Epstein, who now works in the league office. Milwaukee Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns is reportedly interested in joining the Mets but is under contract through the 2022 season.
