Vlad wins Tip O'Neill Award given to best Canadian baseball player
Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s collection of awards continues to grow after an outstanding 2021 campaign.
The Toronto Blue Jays first baseman was named the recipient of this year's James Tip O'Neill Award, the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame announced Tuesday. The honor is given out annually to the best Canadian baseball player based on individual success and team contributions.
"I'm honored to receive this award. It's an honor to be honored in the country I was born in," Guerrero said. "Thank you to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. I hope to win this award again in the future."
Guerrero, who was born in Montreal and is a dual citizen in Canada and the Dominican Republic, placed second in American League MVP voting, won the Hank Aaron Award, finished tied for the AL home run title, captured a Silver Slugger Award, and was named an All-Star for the first time in his career last season.
The 22-year-old slugger went deep 48 times with 111 RBIs and a 1.002 OPS over 161 games.
Guerrero beat out Canadians Tyler O'Neill, Joey Votto, Cal Quantrill, and Jordan Romano for the award.
