Maple Leafs trade Dermott to Canucks for 3rd-round pick
The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded defenseman Travis Dermott to the Vancouver Canucks for a 2022 third-round pick, the team announced Sunday.
The pick originally belonged to the Winnipeg Jets.
Dermott has five points in 43 games while averaging 14:43 of ice time per contest this season. The 34th overall pick of the 2015 draft fell out of favor with the Maple Leafs and has been a healthy scratch multiple times in 2021-22. Toronto also needed to clear cap space to trade for Mark Giordano.
The 25-year-old has posted strong underlying numbers while playing sheltered, third-pairing minutes:
Dermott is signed through 2022-23 at a $1.5-million cap hit.
The Canucks also traded Travis Hamonic to the Ottawa Senators on Sunday for a third-round pick. So essentially, Vancouver swapped Hamonic for Dermott - who's both younger and cheaper.
Here's how Vancouver's blue line projects after the deals:
LD | RD |
---|---|
Oliver Ekman-Larsson | Tyler Myers |
Quinn Hughes | Luke Schenn |
Travis Dermott | Tucker Poolman* |
Brad Hunt | Noah Juulsen |
*Currently injured
Dermott shoots left, but he spent most of the 2021-22 campaign playing on the right side with the Leafs.
