Panthers trade Robbie Anderson to Cardinals
The Carolina Panthers are trading wide receiver Robbie Anderson to the Arizona Cardinals, a source told Jordan Schultz, theScore's NFL insider.
The teams later confirmed the deal, which is pending Anderson passing a physical.
Carolina will receive a sixth-round pick in 2024 and a seventh-round selection in 2025, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The move comes a day after Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks sent Anderson to the locker room midway through a 24-10 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. The 29-year-old, who wasn't targeted in the first half versus the Rams, had a testy exchange with wide receivers coach Joe Dailey on the sideline earlier in the game.
With the defeat, Carolina dropped to 1-5 this season.
The Panthers, who fired coach Matt Rhule on Oct. 10, reportedly had been shopping Anderson for a couple of weeks.
Anderson was in his third season in Charlotte. He caught 95 passes, 1,096 yards, and three touchdowns in his first year but hasn't been able to replicate that production. Anderson has only 13 receptions for 206 yards and one score through six games in 2022.
The Temple product signed a two-year extension in 2021 and is under contract through next season. The Cardinals now owe him the remaining $690,000 prorated portion of his base salary this year, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
The Cardinals will be Anderson's third team. He played the first four seasons of his career with the New York Jets after going undrafted in 2016.
Arizona's offense has struggled and is coming off a season-low nine points in its Week 6 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The Cardinals saw Marquise Brown - their No. 1 receiver through the first six games - go down with a foot injury Sunday that reportedly could be season-ending.
However, Arizona is expected to welcome back former All-Pro wideout DeAndre Hopkins for his season debut Thursday against the New Orleans Saints. He served a six-game suspension for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy.
The Cardinals also roster wideouts A.J. Green, Greg Dortch, and Rondale Moore, who's the team's primary option in the slot.
