Astros sign Javier to 5-year extension reportedly worth $64M

The Houston Astros have signed right-hander Cristian Javier to a five-year contract extension, the club announced Friday.

Javier's deal is worth $64 million and includes a $2-million signing bonus.

The pact includes bonuses and escalators based on Cy Young voting results, reports Robert Murray of FanSided.

The extension is the first significant deal handed out by new Astros general manager Dana Brown. It buys out three of Javier's arbitration years and two years of free agency.

"We felt that he is the perfect candidate for this type of deal as a core piece of our rotation," Brown said in a statement. "This is in line with our vision to try to lock players up to sustain our success both now and in the future."

Javier posted a 2.54 ERA with a 0.95 WHIP and 194 strikeouts over 148 2/3 innings (25 starts) during a breakout 2022 season. The 25-year-old only allowed one earned run with 16 strikeouts over 12 2/3 innings in last year's playoffs to help the Astros win the World Series.
