Buccaneers hire Dave Canales as offensive coordinator
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are hiring Dave Canales as their new offensive coordinator, the team announced Thursday.
Canales, who was the quarterbacks coach for the Seattle Seahawks last season and has been with the Seahawks organization since 2010, confirmed the reports on social media.
"Let's go Buccaneers!" he tweeted. "Ready to get to work, get better every day, and win some championships. Thankful to be part of The Tampa Bay Buccaneers Nation. Let's Get It."
The 41-year-old helped resurrect Geno Smith's career, helping him win Comeback Player of the Year and become one of the NFL's best quarterbacks in 2022.
The Seahawks finished with a 9-8 record, losing in the wild-card round to the San Francisco 49ers. Seattle finished 10th in points per game last season.
Tampa Bay fired offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich in January after a disappointing 2022 campaign. The Buccaneers finished 15th in yards per game and especially struggled on the ground. They rushed for 75.6 yards per contest, dead last in the league.
Canales will be tasked with helping the Buccaneers transition from the post-Tom Brady era. Kyle Trask is currently the only quarterback under contract for the 2023 season.
This will be the first time since 2008 that Canales hasn't worked under Pete Carroll. He was the assistant strength coach at USC in 2009, then followed Carroll to Seattle in 2010.
