San Diego State sent a letter to the Mountain West on Tuesday about its intention to resign from the conference, reports The Athletic's Stewart Mandel and Chris Vannini.

The letter isn't an official notice, per Vannini.

The school also asked the Mountain West for a one-month extension to leave the conference "given unforeseen delays involving other collegiate athletic conferences beyond our control," sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel.

San Diego State has to pay roughly $16.5 million if it exits the Mountain West before June 30. However, that number jumps to nearly $34 million if the Aztecs leave after the deadline, according to Thamel.

San Diego State has been linked to the Pac-12 this offseason, but the school reportedly has not yet received an offer from the conference. The Pac-12 is in the process of landing a new TV deal.

The Aztecs are open to exploring all options if it gets to June 30 and the Pac-12 doesn't have a TV contract in place, a source told Thamel. In addition to the one-month extension, San Diego State is also asking the Mountain West to discuss its exit fee.

The Mountain West reportedly responded to San Diego State via letter on June 14, informing the school that the conference accepted the withdrawal notice and doesn't plan on relieving the Aztecs of any financial obligation.

San Diego State football has won the Mountain West twice (2015 and 2016) since the conference created its championship game in 2013. Meanwhile, the Aztecs' basketball team reached the national title game in April, losing to UConn.

The Aztecs joined the Mountain West in 1999. They'd previously served as members of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) since the 1970s.
