Report: Nationals sign former top prospect Senzel to 1-year, $2M deal

The Washington Nationals are giving Nick Senzel a chance to turn around his career.

Washington agreed to a one-year, $2-million deal with the former top prospect, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman. The reported deal includes $1 million in performance bonuses.

Senzel was selected by the Cincinnati Reds with the second overall pick in the 2016 draft, but he struggled at the big-league level across five seasons in the majors between 2019-23.

The 28-year-old produced a .239/.302/.369 slash line with 33 home runs and 125 RBIs in 377 games during that time frame, playing the majority of his defensive reps in center field. He also spent some time at third base, the two corner outfield spots, and second base.

Senzel joins a young Nationals club that improved by 16 wins last season thanks to a core built around shortstop CJ Abrams, catcher Keibert Ruiz, and pitchers Josiah Gray and MacKenzie Gore.
