Sirianni: Eagles' offense 'stale' in season's final stretch
Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni addressed Philadelphia's struggles during the team's end-of-season press conference on Wednesday along with general manager Howie Roseman.
Sirianni believes that bringing in new coordinators will help make his team less predictable in 2024.
"We got a little stale on offense at the end of the year," the sideline boss said, according to Brooks Kubena of The Athletic. "The new person is meant to take away the staleness."
The Eagles began the 2023 season as one of the NFL's best teams with a 10-1 record. But Philadelphia regressed as the campaign progressed and lost six of its final seven games, including the playoffs.
Following a 32-9 wild-card loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Eagles parted ways with offensive coordinator Brian Johnson and defensive coordinator Sean Desai. Philadelphia also didn't retain Matt Patricia, who replaced Desai as the club's defensive play-caller in the season's final stretch.
Sirianni's outfit has reportedly begun interviewing candidates to fill those vacancies. The team met with Ron Rivera about its defensive coordinator job and is also interested in Vic Fangio, a longtime DC who recently parted ways with the Miami Dolphins. Offensively, the Eagles are considering multiple candidates, including former Arizona head coach Kliff Kingsbury.
"The new (offensive) coordinator will be heavily involved. He is bringing in a scheme for us to be able to function in," Sirianni said, according to 97.5 The Fanatic.
There was speculation about Sirianni's future after the loss to Tampa Bay. However, several Eagles players have shown support for the sideline boss, who is 34-17 across three years with Philly. Roseman also backed Sirianni on Wednesday.
"Before the stretch, we were 26-5 ... that is hard to do in this league," he said. "We were 33-11 up to that point. Not okay finishing 1-6. But it is hard to find someone who can do that."
Under Sirianni's watch, the Eagles have made the playoffs three times and played in Super Bowl LVII when they ultimately fell short against the Kansas City Chiefs.
"Just hungry to be able to prove myself again," Sirianni said Wednesday, per Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia.
Roseman also shouldered the blame for Philadelphia's season disappointing outcome.
"When I have my best seasons, this team has its best seasons. I hold myself to a very high standard," he said.
