Nneka Ogwumike leaving Sparks in free agency

Los Angeles Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike announced Wednesday that she's leaving the franchise in free agency after 12 seasons.

"Nneka has been a leader and changemaker for the Sparks, the city of Los Angeles, the WNBA, and women's sports," managing partner and governor Eric Holoman said in a statement to ESPN's Ramona Shelburne. "From drafting her No. 1 in 2012 to her game-winning shot in the 2016 WNBA Finals, her 2016 MVP trophy, and so many special memories, her legacy is cemented as one of the greatest to ever wear purple and gold."

Ogwumike informed the Sparks of her decision to depart in free agency as soon as possible to allow the franchise to adjust its offseason approach, according to Shelburne.

The 33-year-old met with the Sparks, Atlanta Dream, Phoenix Mercury, and Chicago Sky once the WNBA's free-agent negotiating window opened Sunday, sources told Shelburne. The eight-time All-Star intends to meet with the Seattle Storm and New York Liberty before making a decision.

Ogwumike averaged 19.1 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.7 steals last season.

The Sparks have missed the playoffs for the last three seasons.
