Report: Warriors won't let Wiggins play for Canada at 2024 Olympics

The Golden State Warriors won't allow Andrew Wiggins to represent Team Canada at the 2024 Paris Olympics, a source told The Toronto Star's Doug Smith.

Golden State is worried Wiggins could suffer an injury at the event while the team tries to trade the forward, Smith adds.

Wiggins was insured and cleared medically by Canada Basketball and isn't happy about the Warriors' decision, according to Sportsnet's Michael Grange.

Wiggins hasn't donned a Canadian jersey since the Tokyo Olympic qualifiers in July 2021. He was recently invited to Canada's 20-man training camp roster.

Wiggins is coming off his worst statistical season as a professional, as he averaged just 13.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.7 assists while shooting 45% from the field.

Despite Wiggins' absence, Canada still currently features 11 NBA players, as well as the 2024 No. 9 pick Zach Edey.

Canada is scheduled to play an exhibition match against the United States, coached by Warriors bench boss Steve Kerr, on July 10 in Las Vegas. Canada will then face host France on July 19 and the winner of the Olympic Qualifying Tournament held in Puerto Rico on July 21.

The Canadians have been placed in Group A with Australia and two other nations yet to be determined. Their first contest will be on July 27 against the winner of the qualifying tournament held in Greece.

Canada is looking to build on its bronze medal-winning campaign at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. It'll be the nation's first Olympic tournament since the 2000 Sydney Games.
