Dolphins' McDaniel prioritizing Tua's health, confirms Thompson as QB1
Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said he's only focused on Tua Tagovailoa's health after the quarterback sustained a concussion Thursday.
"I will not do anything to make things worse or hurt any of our players," McDaniel said Friday, according to ESPN's Marcel Louis-Jacques.
He added: "There's a lot of people who have vested interest in the Miami Dolphins, but questioning timelines - that gives forth anxiety."
Tagovailoa left Miami's 31-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night in the third quarter. The 26-year-old previously said he considered retiring after suffering two concussions during the 2022 season.
"His career is his ... I just wish people would hear for a second what I'm saying, that bringing up his future is not in the best interest for him," McDaniel added, per Louis-Jacques.
McDaniel confirmed Friday that backup Skylar Thompson will be the Dolphins' starter until Tagovailoa returns.
"The team and organization is very confident in Skylar," said McDaniel, who added that Miami is planning on adding another QB for depth.
Ryan Tannehill, who started 88 games for the Dolphins from 2012-18, is the best free-agent quarterback available.
Thompson has started three games in his NFL career, including the playoffs, passing for two touchdowns against five interceptions. All of his starts came during the 2022 season as a rookie.
The Dolphins visit the Seattle Seahawks in Week 3.
