Giants GM: Drafting QB not 'mandatory'
The New York Giants aren't feeling the pressure to pick a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft after the offseason additions of veterans Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson.
"With the signing of (Winston and Wilson), I think we put ourselves in a position where I don't think that's mandatory," general manager Joe Schoen said Wednesday. "I think the two guys we've signed have played a lot of ball, they've got a lot of skins on the wall, and I do think we've upgraded that room compared to where it was a year ago."
Schoen also described signal-caller Tommy DeVito as "still developing" and said he's "happy" with the team's quarterback room overall.
The Giants, who hold the No. 3 overall pick in the draft, have scheduled private workouts with several quarterback prospects, including Colorado's Shedeur Sanders, Alabama's Jalen Milroe, and Louisville's Tyler Shough.
However, Schoen emphasized that while landing a franchise passer remains a priority, "the value has to be right," per Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports.
Schoen also revealed that he's "received some calls" from teams inquiring about moving up to the No. 3 pick and is open to a deal. But he added that he's also comfortable staying put, noting that he likes the options available at the spot.
If New York doesn't take a quarterback with the No. 3 overall selection, pass-rusher Abdul Carter could be available to select, as quarterback Cam Ward and two-way star Travis Hunter are expected to go first and second overall, respectively.
