The Vegas Golden Knights signed star forward Jack Eichel to an eight-year contract extension with a $13.5-million cap hit, the team announced Wednesday.

Eichel tallied 28 goals last season and set a Golden Knights franchise record with 94 points. He finished fifth in both Hart Trophy and Selke Trophy voting and was a finalist for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy after accumulating only eight penalty minutes.

The 28-year-old was set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. He's in the final season of an eight-year, $80-million deal signed in October 2017 with the Buffalo Sabres. Eichel will usurp Mitch Marner as Vegas' highest-paid player when the contract commences in 2026.

Eichel's the latest big name to re-up in the last two weeks. Kirill Kaprizov inked an eight-year deal with the Minnesota Wild, which includes a record $17-million cap hit. Connor McDavid signed a surprisingly team-friendly two-year, $25-million pact Monday with the Edmonton Oilers. And Winnipeg Jets winger Kyle Connor penned an eight-year, $96-million extension earlier Wednesday.

Eichel has racked up 239 goals and 608 points over 10 seasons with the Sabres and Golden Knights. He won the Stanley Cup in his first full campaign in Vegas, leading all playoff performers with 26 points in 22 contests.

The Golden Knights acquired Eichel from Buffalo in November 2021 for Alex Tuch, Peyton Krebs, a first-round pick, and a second-round pick.
