Orioles land Baz in 5-player trade with Rays
The Baltimore Orioles acquired right-hander Shane Baz from the Tampa Bay Rays for outfielder Slater de Brun, catcher Caden Bodine, right-hander Michael Forret, outfielder Austin Overn, and a 2026 draft pick in competitive balance round A, both clubs announced Friday.
The move came shortly after the Rays reportedly hatched a three-team trade to send All-Star second baseman Brandon Lowe, reliever Mason Montgomery, and outfielder Jake Mangum to the Pittsburgh Pirates in a deal that netted Tampa Bay outfield prospect Jacob Melton and right-hander Anderson Brito from the Houston Astros.
Baz posted a 4.87 ERA and 4.37 FIP with 9.5 K/9 over 166 1/3 innings while making 31 starts this past season. He's projected to make around $2.8 million next year and is arbitration-eligible through 2028.
The 26-year-old will join an Orioles rotation that also includes Trevor Rogers, Kyle Bradish, Dean Kremer, and Tyler Wells.
De Brun was the No. 6-ranked prospect in Baltimore's minor-league system, according to MLB Pipeline. The 18-year-old was taken with the 37th pick in this year's draft.
Bodine, the 30th selection in the 2025 draft, was the 10th-ranked prospect in the O's system. The 22-year-old played 11 games in Single-A.
The 21-year-old Forret authored a 2.07 ERA with 11.1 K/9 over a combined 74 innings between Single-A and Double-A in 2025 en route to being listed as Baltimore's 11th-best prospect.
Overn, 22, hit 13 homers with 43 RBIs and a .754 OPS in 114 games between Single-A and Double-A this year.
