This Day in Football History
2002 - Marvin Harrison breaks single-season reception record
With his sixth catch of the Indianapolis Colts' Week 15 win over the Cleveland Browns, and his 124th of the season, wide receiver Marvin Harrison breaks the NFL's single-season record for receptions.
Harrison passes former Detroit Lions receiver Herman Moore, who hauled in 123 passes in 1995.
After finishing the game with nine catches and two touchdowns, Harrison goes on to add another 16 receptions over the last two weeks of the season, finishing the year with 143.
1997 - 49ers retire Joe Montana's No. 16
Honoring the quarterback that led them to four Super Bowl victories, the San Francisco 49ers retire Joe Montana's No. 16 at halftime of their game against the Denver Broncos.
Montana becomes the eighth player in franchise history to have his number retired, joining the likes of Y.A. Tittle, Joe Perry, Jimmy Johnson and Dwight Clark.
He would deservedly be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000, cementing his status as one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history.
