DFS: Numbers Game - A Look at the Key Stats from Week 5
It was an exciting week of action in the NFL where the contenders have began to separate themselves from the pretenders. Along the way, there were some eye-popping numbers that stood out this past week.
148: The combined age between Indianapolis' four players who scored and led them to victory on Thursday night over Houston: Matt Hasselbeck, 40, threw both of his touchdown passes to 34-year-old Andre Johnson. Frank Gore, 32, ran for two scores while 42-year-old Adam Vinatieri was successful on both field goals and all three PATs. This an an average age of 37 for the Colts' offensive leaders.
1998: There are currently three active players remaining from the 1998 NFL Draft. One of them is the aforementioned Hasselbeck, a sixth round pick of the Packers. The other two? First overall pick of the Colts, Peyton Manning, and fourth overall pick of the Raiders, Charles Woodson.
Woodson happened to pick off Manning not once, but twice this week in Oakland during a 16-10 loss. These were the first two interceptions off the eldest Manning brother in Woodson's career.
6: Six teams remain undefeated after Week 5: The Falcons, Panthers, Bengals, Broncos, Packers and Patriots. Four seem like locks for their divisions. The Falcons and Panthers will have to battle it out for the NFC South - the laughing stock of the league last season. The Patriots possess the best chance to go undefeated - again - with the easiest remaining schedule among the group.
76: The amount of rushing yards gained by Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor in Week 5 against the Titans - the most by a QB in Bills history. After a slow start for the offense, Bills OC Greg Roman unleashed Taylor in the second half like it was Virginia Tech vs. Oregon.
The comeback win improved Buffalo to 3-2 on the season. Rushing yards for a QB are a dream for DFSers looking for a high floor in a quarterback.
10: Ten of the 12 games on Sunday were won by a team that was trailing at some point in the game. Only Green Bay and New England cruised to victory without a scare. This ties an NFL record for comebacks in which fewer than 25 teams were active.
Not only does this make for an exciting day of football, but also a whirlwind of ups and downs for DFSers. Comebacks tend to lead to loads of passing yards and last-second scores.
31.9: The average number of fantasy points-per-game in a standard scoring system by Falcons running back Devonta Freeman during his incredible three game stretch as Atlanta's feature back. The number is much higher in formats that employ Point-Per-Reception (PPR) scoring and bonus points for game milestones.
Freeman has established himself as "the player to stop" by oppositions on an offense that has Matt Ryan and Julio Jones. Regardless of how much his price spikes, pay up for the former Seminole.
305: The amount of rushing yards tallied by Rams RB Todd Gurley in his past two starts. He became just the fourth back in NFL history to gain at least 140 yards on the ground in back-to-back games.
What makes it even more impressive is that it happened in his first two starts in which he was heavily featured. He missed the season's first two games due to a torn ACL he suffered in college. His price was fairly low last week. No matter how much it increases, take a stab at the former Bulldog in all formats.
70: The NFL record for passing attempts in a single game set by the win-less Detroit Lions in their Week 5 loss to Arizona. Matthew Stafford was 20/32 before being benched in favor of journeyman Dan Orlovsky, who went 21/38. It was a dream team for PPR formats, as six different players had at least three catches or more. Scat back Theo Riddick led the way with 10 receptions.
The Lions' rushing attack has been dreadful all season forcing them to go to the air - which hasn't quite worked out either. Despite having Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate and Eric Ebron as dangerous receiving threats, a shaky offensive line has limited what Detroit can do on offense.
