Rashean Mathis to sign one-day contract, retire as Jaguar
Rashean Mathis won't officially be walking away from football before he has the opportunity to rejoin the team with which he spent the first 10 years of his NFL career.
The veteran cornerback will sign a one-day contract to retire as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars next week, the team announced Friday.
Mathis, a second-round pick in 2003, was one of the NFL's most consistent cornerbacks for the better part of his lengthy stay in Jacksonville.
He started in an impressive 129 games over that stretch and recorded a franchise-record 30 interceptions.
Mathis' most productive season in a Jaguars uniform came in 2006, where he was rewarded with his lone career Pro Bowl appearance after hauling in eight interceptions.
The 35-year-old announced his intentions to retire in February after spending three seasons with the Detroit Lions.
