Report: Jets to sign Bernard Pierce, waive Zac Stacy

The New York Jets are set to sign free-agent running back Bernard Pierce, a source told Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

Pierce adds depth and competition to a Jets backfield that already features Matt Forte, Bilal Powell, and Khiry Robinson.

New York is expected to waive Zac Stacy with a failed physical designation to create the necessary space on the 90-man training camp roster, a source told Adam Caplan of ESPN.

Pierce, who spent three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens before joining the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2015, will presumably compete for a fringe roster spot in camp.

A two-game suspension handed down earlier this offseason means he won't be available until Week 3, but the Jets also thus have the flexibility to delay a decision on his roster status. An injury to another back early in the season could give him some rotational value upon making his return.

The 25-year-old's most productive season came as a rookie in 2012, when he took 108 carries for 532 yards and one touchdown. He saw just six carries across seven games before his lone season with the Jaguars was brought to an end due to injury.
